The Kirby Fire Department was established 69 years ago in 1950 as an all-volunteer department.
It was not until 1982, that the City of Kirby created its own department to provide EMS service to the citizens of Kirby thus merging to a full service Fire/EMS Department.
This would eventually lead to the City of Kirby hiring EMS medics to staff its own 24 hour EMS service while maintaining the volunteer fire department.
As the demand for upgraded services escalated, so did the staffing, with the addition of a paid fire position and upgrade equipment.
Today, the City of Kirby has a staff of 16 paid cross trained Fire/EMS personnel while still maintaining our historic traditions through 10 volunteer personnel.
Over the years, the escalating cost of providing fire and first responder services to the unincorporated areas of Bexar County with a nominal stipend from the County became far too great to bear. In 2010, the City of Kirby Fire Department was instrumental in the establishment of Emergency Service District #11.
